Annalise Murphy has become the first Irish Sailor to claim a place at the 2012 Olympic games. She moved into second place overall yesterday in the Laser Radial class at the ISAF Sailing World Championship off the coast of Western Australia.
Murphy, who sails out of the Dun Laoghaire Yacht Club is now assured of a high enough finish to secure her Olympic starting place. The World Championship Medal race takes place on Sunday.
The Olympic sailing events will take place in Weymouth next year. Murphy took bronze in the ISAF World Cup when it was held there in June of this year and will now be one of Ireland’s best hopes for an Olympic medal next summer.
