It’s a time of change and transition in Donegal GAA.  Players are leaving the senior panel, Martin McHugh has his eyes focused on the Club Players Association and Michael Murphy is heading off to play Rugby in France.

Thankfully the last of these changes is only temporary.  At the age of 27 and with an All Ireland medal in his pocket Murphy is flying out to Clermont in the French Top 14 to try his hand at a new sport as part of AIB’s multi award winning documentary series The Toughest Trade.

Welsh Rugby star Shane Williams has already had his week with Murphy’s club mates in Glenswilly and both will feature in the series to be broadcast on TV and in episodic format online over the coming months.

Last year’s trade of Aidan O’Shea to an NFL combine and Padraic Maher to Big Six Cricket in Australia resulted in both their counties making it to Croke Park and an All Ireland Final.  Tipp won, Mayo lost after a replay.

If sport is all about superstition and luck then Rory Gallagher and the Donegal management and fans will wish Murphy a successful trip and a safe return home.

Murphy has never played rugby though did watch Leinster games while studying in Dublin.  he doesn’t speak the language having studied German in school but he is up for the challenge and while some of the hits he will take will have fans back at home covering their eyes we can’t wait to see how it all works out.
