English rugby is developing an elite academy structure with an initial pool of 30 players mainly drawn from the top under age players at U16, U18 and U20 as well as a small number seen as being on the edge of the national squad.
The idea brings to national level some of the ideas and initiatives developed in Ireland through each of the four provincial academies.
The English RFU has drawn on the sponsorship of BMW to fund what will be known as the BMW Performance Academy and will become an elite division within the existing National Academy Programme.
RFU Coaches working with the individual and their club personnel will put together an individual development plan, for activity on and off the pitch, to develop strength in depth for the 2015 Rugby World Cup to be hosted by England.
BMW, who fill the role of official vehicle supplier in England that Volkswagen holds with the IRFU will deepen and extend their relationship through the provision of business skills training, responsible driving courses and work experience.
It is a good way for the company and the sport to make sure that there is a connection that provides longevity and plays to the respective strengths of both sides. Rugby supplies elite players who will enliven the workplace; BMW the skills that will equip them for life after their career comes to an end.
The Academy structure in Ireland requires active community service in hospitals and local projects as well as educational qualifications focused on sport as well as fitness, media and psychological skills.
