There is an interesting meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee for Culture, Communications and Sport this evening, featuring Mark Scanlon and Richard Webb of LOITV, as well as Noel Quinn and Niamh McCoy from GAA+ and the GAA, before the group.
The heading of the session is Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the revised General Scheme of the Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill.
Finding your way into the aforementioned Bill requires a bit of guidance, as it comes in at 93 pages of at times incredibly detailed technical areas, including, but not limited to, areas of governance, conflicts of interest, and more, as stated in the small print.
We can only wonder in advance why these two service providers of streamed sports have been asked to appear, and not others from Rugby, Hockey, Basketball, Cricket, or the many more that provide streamed services.
It is doubly interesting on a day when the House of Commons in London is debating an issue of insisting, in some way, on the provision of a specific number of English Premier League games free to air.
Could it be to gain insight into the requirement for a list of ‘special events’ that must be provided on free-to-air coverage?
Could it be to gain insight on how far the extension of the Bill should go? Currently, it is primarily focused on RTÉ and TG4, likely due to the state funding models.
And it may be something very innocuous, related to the relative growth of the two services; however, any questions that may arise will likely fall under commercial sensitivity.
As we said at the top, interesting…
