Paralympics Ireland will take a team of nine athletes to the World Paralympic Athletics Championships in Doha later this month.
Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop will go into their events as favourites to land gold while Team manager James Nolan also has high hopes for others to make their mark at the event second only to the Paralympic Games in terms of profile and performance.
Deirdre Mongan, Noelle Lenihan and Niamh McCarthy all go into the Championships with a World Top 3 ranking in their classes and will be hoping to build on recent great performances.
All three are in throwing events and took note of the special throwing area coming to life at the new Institute of Sport high performance facility at the National Sports campus which is currently nearing completion.
The Irish team and all their equipment will be flying directly to Qatar from Dublin to be part of a 1400 strong athlete group competing in 214 medal events in Doha.
Their preparation and profile has been helped by the engagement of Allianz as official team sponsors in addition to their role as partners to Paralympics Ireland.
Allianz has a global commitment to Paralympic Sport and Ireland will be one of 18 countries around the world where strong support exists between the company and the national associations.
Ireland’s activation and building up of the profile of the Paralympics team has been held up as a best in class example at global level and their sponsorship of the Setanta Sport TV coverage of the London 2012 Games was a key milestone in the development of the sport here.
Channel 4 will carry live coverage from Doha and it is expected that RTÉ will feature key irish moments from the game as part on online and news coverage.
