Canada is to host the next International Paralympic Committee World Swimming Championships.  It will take place in August 2013 and will hopefully feature a number of the successful Irish Paralympians from London 2012, including Gold Medal winners Darragh McDonald and Bethany Firth.
The event is likely to be similar in scale to the last Championships held in Eindhoven and the Paralympic Games in London where a little over 600 competitors took part in 150 medal events.
The substantial rise in local and global interest in Paralympic sport means that more international events are likely to find commercial and public support.
The National Aquatic Centre at Abbottstown is a venue that is likely capable of hosting training camps but also major European and International events as was shown at the time of the Dublin Cup in Water Polo this summer.
The consideration of a bid to host a major Paralympic Sport event would be great recognition of the success of the Irish team at London 2012 and the facilities for swimming are probably better equipped than almost any other sport to do so.
