The sponsor of the Irish Olympic Sailing team brought a group of media and staff onto the water of Dun Laoghaire Harbour yesterday to illustrate at close quarters the technical and physical skills required to compete at the highest level.
Providence Resources are using the sponsorship to build relationships with the sailing community and assure them that potential drilling for natural resources off Cork and Dublin will not affect the area’s natural or sporting amenity.
It was hoped that as many as 30 sporting and business media, in company with Providence Chairman Tony O’Reilly would actually sail on the Olympic craft but gusting winds meant that was deemed unsafe and instead they watched from larger vessels as a series of exhibition races was staged.
The experience was a great way to engage with staff as well as a PR exercise and shows the lengths that companies need to go to in order to fully activate a partnership to the best effect.
Dun Laoghaire is presently hosting the ISAF World Youth Championships, one of sailing’s most prestigious events.  Its principal sponsor is Four Star Pizza and racing on Dublin Bay continues until Friday of this week.  An estimated 1,000 visitors, including 350 competitors from around the world are creating a real buzz around the area.
