The Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon takes place this Bank Holiday Monday and will see 7,500 runners hit the streets of Dublin from the Docklands to the Phoenix Park.
They will travel from every corner of Ireland and from, at latest count, 46 countries around the world.
Last year’s Dublin debut for what is now a worldwide franchise, was a major part of the Gathering but such was it’s strength that it has survived and thrived into year two. Coca Cola has come on board as sponsors under the Powerade and Depp Riverrock brands and they have been joined by Zagg International, one of the world’s largest suppliers of mobile phone accessories.
Music is at the heart of the race with bands playing at every mile marker along the route and a big concert in the park for runners, family and friends.
There will be a 3KM family fun run at the finish as well with a unique finishers medal for everyone taking part.
Core
Such mass participation events have become a major part of Athletics Ireland reach out to to population, putting running at the core but surrounding it with a social element that is more inclusive than the traditional racing.
The logic is that those who come along to watch and be part of the experience will become more involved and start their own journey from the couch to a 5K first then either up through the distances or getting faster on the clock.
Last weekend the Colour Dash saw 3,000 runners doused in powder paint through the same venue and a similar number took part on Dun Laoghaire pier earlier in the summer.
Engagement
For sponsors an event like this delivers in sport and music, the two fastest growing areas of engagement with consumers here in Ireland and around the world.
