
The major change will be the presence in the Sunday Game Live presenters chair of Joanne Cantwell who takes over from Michael Lyster and will start off with a double bill of Munster Hurling next Sunday through coverage of Waterford against Clare from Walsh Park and Tipperaray facing Cork at Pairc Uí Chaoimh.
RTÉ Radio One’s coverage started on Sunday with Marty Morrissey providing live coverage from New York of Mayo’s opening round victory in the Connacht Championship.
“RTÉ will bring you closer to the unique excitement of our national games with every development in the Championship covered using all of RTÉ’s platforms- you won’t miss a thing,” said RTÉ Head of Sport Declan McBennet.
“As we celebrate 40 years of The Sunday Game we enter the new season with a renewed focus on quality analysis and there’s certainly strength and depth in RTÉ’s championship panel.”
Anthony Daly, Ursula Jacob and Jackie Tyrrell will be the analysts in sturdio alongside Cantwell next Sunday afternoon for a live Munster Hurling Championship double-bill. First up Waterford v Clare from Walsh Park followed by Cork v Tipperary from Páirc Uí Chaoimh
Celebrating 40 years on air Ireland’s premier GAA television programme, The Sunday Game, will also return on the evening of Sunday 12 May on RTÉ2 with presenter Des Cahill in the chair joined by Donal Óg Cusack, Henry Shefflin, Joe Brolly and Tomás Ó Sé.
The Sunday Game will have highlights of up to 100 games throughout the season. It will also celebrate its own place in the hearts and minds of the nation with a regular look through the archives and a special programme at the culmination of the Championship which will celebrate four decades of the show.
As well as the regular commentary, there will also be an Irish language version for all games from the quarter-finals onwards in both football and hurling.
RTÉ Radio 1 has the full exclusive national coverage of every match in both hurling and football with commentaries featured on Saturday Sport and Sunday Sport which are the two most popular sports programmes on Irish radio, according to last week’s JNLR figures..
In addition to all the live action, Brian Carthy’s magazine programme, The Championship, returns to RTÉ Radio 1 on Friday nights at 10pm while The Marty Squad presented by Marty Morrissey will also return to Sundays, starting off in Cork on 12 May at 6pm where fans get the chance to air their views.
There will be match trackers and a live score service on rte.ie and the News Now App, while the RTÉ Player will offer live streaming of all RTÉ’s live and highlights programming and the best of the Sunday Game’s expert analysis on the Football, Hurling and Camogie championships.
