Paul McGinleyEuropean Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley was in Dublin yesterday to reveal his first two vice captains for September’s 40th Ryder Cup.

The announcement of competition veterans Sam Torrance and Des Smyth took place at Government Buildings with Ministers Leo Varadkar and Michael Ring in attendance.  Taoiseach Enda Kenny was unable to make it due to a European summit on the Crimea crisis.

The tournament takes place at Gleneagles in Scotland and it is hoped that those travelling for the event will spend time in Ireland either side of the event and boost tourism revenues. Scotland is having a major year hosting the Commonwealth Games in the summer as well.

McGinley himself will be here having said yesterday that he would be attending the All Ireland Hurling Championship Final though fearing the football final might be a little close to the start of the action on the fairways.

The tournament always attracts substantial corporate interest and this year’s sponsorship roster includes Rolex, BMW, EY, Johnnie Walker, Standard Life Investments and the Scotland Tourism Authorities.
