Ireland have a little history with the drama of a penalty shoot-out at a World Cup and last night in Naples the Irish Women’s football team secured a place in the Semi Final of the World University Games with a 4-1 shoot out win over China.
Packie Bonner achieved legendary status with his save against Romania back in Italia ’90. That was only a starter though for Amanda McQuillan who secured a 0-0 draw during the game, scored the first shoot out penalty and then saved China’s third to set up progress to meet North Korea in the Semi Final to be played tomorrow night, Wednesday, July 10th.
The IT Carlow Student and player with Shelbourne FC was the star of the show and what perfect timing to reach such a level hot on the heels of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Men can produce a unique double qualification for the Final Four if they beat Russia in their Quarter Final this evening.
Here is the penalty strike that secured the place for Ireland in the Women’s semifinal.
