John Treacy and Kieran Mulvey have had their roles as CEO and Chair of Sport Ireland extended. Both terms were due to have ended at the conclusion of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games cycle but on Friday of last week, it was confirmed by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media that they would carry on for a while yet.

Mulvey has been reappointed as Chair of the Board for a further two years until 30th September 2022. He was Chair of the Irish Sports Council from 2010 and was appointed as the first Chair of Sport Ireland when that body was formed in 2015.

John Treacy’s role has been extended to 31st December 2021. He was appointed as the first CEO of the newly created Irish Sports Council on 1999, and to the same role in Sport Ireland, initially on an interim basis in 2015, but then on a full-time basis in 2016. His term was due to end on September 30th but Covid-19 and the postponement of the Olympic Games by 12 months have meant that a further extension of his tenure is considered, and generally accepted to be the easiest thing.

Both had overseen the success of Sport Ireland in securing substantial extra funding in a number of key areas from the Government Budget announced earlier last week.

“Sport Ireland’s role in supporting the sport sector and leading the development of sport has never been more crucial than at this present time,” said Minister Catherine Martin.

“Sport Ireland has proven itself to be resilient, agile and responsive over these past seven months, and that is a testament to the agency’s leadership.”

“I felt it important that the experience and expertise brought by Mr Mulvey as Chairperson and Mr Treacy as CEO are retained to support the sector through the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Olive Loughnane and Roger O’Connor have been reappointed for a further term of office as Board members. Caroline Murphy and John Maughan’s terms have expired and a new selection process is expected to replace them.

Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh has been appointed following a selection process that took place earlier in the year. The former President of NUI Galway also served on the Board of the Golfing Union of Ireland.
