Cork fans put their money where their hurling pride was earlier this summer, but the momentum dipped when the Rebels fell short at the final hurdle.

According to the latest AIB Spend Trend, Cork supporters shelled out an estimated €920,000 in Dublin on the day of their All-Ireland semi-final victory over Dublin in early July.

However, when defeat came against Tipperary in the final two weeks later, fan spending dropped sharply, down 13 per cent compared to the semi-final, likely due to the fans making a quick escape home after the final.

Tipperary’s faithful, in contrast, opened their wallets wide as the Liam MacCarthy Cup returned to the Premier County. Fan spending surged by 27 per cent on All-Ireland Final day compared to their semi-final win over Kilkenny on July 6, reflecting the celebrations that come with an All-Ireland victory.

The football showpiece told a different story on the importance of winning. While Kerry lifted the Sam Maguire Cup, it was Donegal fans who topped the spending charts in the capital, with 12 per cent more outlay than their rivals on the day of the final.

Beyond sport, the AIB Spend Trend highlighted a buoyant summer economy, with overall spending in July up 9 per cent year-on-year. The figures were drawn from more than 78 million anonymised and aggregated card transactions by AIB customers across in-store and online purchases.

Sport continues to play a pivotal role in driving economic activity around major events, with the passion of fans translating into a measurable impact for Dublin’s hospitality and retail sectors.
