Irish Olympian Aileen Reid is to be the star participant in the Derry City of Culture Triathlon in June 2013.  This will be one of the many events being held as part of Derry’s being next year’s UK City of Culture.
The Turner Prize exhibition will be the main highlight of the next 12 months but there will be hundreds of productions, shows, cultural and sporting events in and around the city.
The worlds of sport and the arts should really be closer given their shared position within the broad worlds of participation, entertainment and commercial partnership.  This will be a good step forward, and likely to be part of a growing convergence of the two as was seen in London 2012.
Sport for Business is on the Culture, Arts, Sport and Tourism Committee of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce, one of the few areas where the two sides are promoted to dovetail with each other.  We will have more news of events that can provide a broader reach to sporting fans and business supporters over the coming months.  This will be the subject of our Members’ Round Table in February 2013.
The City of Culture Triathlon is being hosted by the North West Triathlon Club and will consist of a [ismember]750 metre swim in the River Foyle, a 20KM cycle ride taking in the two road bridges in the city and a 5KM run starting in the City centre, crossing the Peace bridge and finishing on the Quays.
The City streets will be closed to traffic for this occasion in a way normally reserved for Marathons and a large crowd is expected to watch the anticipated 500 participants.
“I am so proud and delighted the North West Triathlon Club will be hosting this event as part of City of Culture 2013,” said Reid who competed in the London Olympic Games and last year’s World Championships under her maiden name of Morrison. “It promises to be a brilliant event and one not to miss. I wish the club and the City every success in 2013 and look forward to taking part in the celebrations.”

The event will take place on June 23rd and registration can be made through www.triathlonireland.com
