The latest in our series of Leadership Interviews is with Ryle Nugent who, two years after leaving RTÉ, has this week established Stakeholder Sport to add to his commitments from the commentary box.

It is a thoughtful interview looking at the ways in which we might emerge from the current crisis and at the damage it will leave behind.

“It is unavoidable that some deals will fall apart. There has been a disintegration of the sports ecosystem all around the world and nothing is moving as it was.”

“It doesn’t matter if you are the biggest or the smallest player, if there is no cash, there is no cash and each stakeholder in the chain has its own issues.”

“Frankly, it is frightening.”

“We do not know where the bottom of this is and all we can do is scenario plan for when a return to action might come at the start of July, August, September or whenever.”

“I am not sure that international, cross border sport will return this year.”

“Not to be wholly pessimistic there are a great number of very smart people in this sector and a way will be found to get back to hosting sport, and delivering sport in a way that will inspire us again.”

Nugent has had a front line seat for the broadcast element of sport throughout his career. It’s an interview well worth watching…
