Dublin City Council’s Sport and Wellbeing Partnership is to play a key role in a new Government initiative to revitalise Dublin’s North Inner City, the centre of gangland violence in recent months.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced last night that €1 million in immediate funding was to be provided for use in reviving or developing sports facilities in the area as a means of boosting community pride and community based public facilities.
Work has already begun on identifying suitable projects for the investment to create the maximum positive impact.
The money is available to be spent in 2016 so projects need to be ready to go with immediate effect.
The Partnership was created six months ago, is chaired by Fiona Coghlan and comprises representatives from Dublin GAA, the FAI. Leinster Rugby, the Federation of Irish Sport and others including Rob Hartnett of Sport for Business.
It is being led by Dublin Deputy CEO Brendan Kenny and Head of Sport Shauna McIntyre.
It will also have a role to play in the longer term task force being headed by Sport Ireland Chair Kieran Mulvey which will report directly to the Taoiseach by November on how Government support for the area can best be pulled together.
It is an exciting project to have a real impact on the lives of the people who live in the area.
“I have visited this area a number of times and have listened carefully to the views of residents and groups here,” said the Taoiseach announcing the new plans.
“It was clear to me that a significant amount of great work is being done in this area, what is also clear is the dedication and great spirit of the local community.”
“However, the North East Inner City faces profound challenges despite the great efforts and strengths of so many people.”
“The Taskforce I am announcing today seeks to protect and invest in this community, in their lives today, and in their futures.”
“Its main objective is to recommend and implement measures for the long-term economic and social regeneration of this area – with a ten year timeframe in mind.”
“In the shorter term, I am delighted to announce some projects that will offer supports and improve opportunity. I remain personally committed to this initiative and I intend to keep visiting the area myself.”
