Sports Direct Ireland has announced the launch of ‘Sports Slam’ a new primary school initiative that aims to equip teachers and parents across the country with the tools and ideas to get 5 to 12-year-olds participating in fun, physical activity for 60 minutes per day.
Getting the habit of activity into that age group is a key part in encouraging a lifetime of engagement with sport and physical activity
Sports Slam 2023 will run in participating schools nationwide from June 18th to 23rd and aims to remove the barriers to sports participation for as many children as possible.
Each day will see a focus on one of five different sports across the week including basketball, rugby, athletics, boxing and yoga. Schools signing up will be able to access multiple lesson plans and ideas for games to keep it fresh and fun for all.
A key element is the removal of the competition element from sports participation, to give kids the freedom and right to play, while also learning new skills along the way.
Alongside getting active and discovering new sports, students will walk back into classrooms after the summer break, empowered by the development of personal skills like confidence, teamwork and mental well-being. Sports Slam is open to Primary Schools nationwide and registration is open now at www.sportstartshere.com
We are thrilled to be launching Sports Slam in Ireland this summer and are really looking forward to working with schools across the country to encourage their pupils to get out, get active and play for fun for 60 minutes every day across the week,” said Managing Director Sports Direct Ireland, Leonard Brassel.
“We know how important it is for young people to get out and get active, yet we also understand that for many, there are obstacles that stop them from participating in sport.”
“We hope that Sports Slam will help remove some of those barriers and allow children to get involved in a fun and playful way, while we also will be supporting teachers and parents by providing them with the lesson plans and ideas that they need to help roll out the programme.”
Sports Slam was first rolled out in the UK by Sports Direct in 2022 and saw unprecedented success in its first year. This year, Sports Direct has linked up with children’s charity, Youth Sports Trust, in a new, partnership and is calling on schools and children around the country to Play for Fun, Play for 60.
The Youth Sport Trust equips educators and empowers young people with the vision of creating a future where every child enjoys the life-changing benefits of play and sport. Sport gives young people a platform to have their voice heard and a place to feel they belong. The national charity harnesses this extraordinary power to change young lives and help them build a brighter future.
