Aviva launched its sponsorship of the national secondary schools athletics Championships yesterday. This caters for kids heading towards the elite level of participation in sport but on the same day at Morton Stadium in Santry, the Cumman na mBunscoil Athletics Finals were attracting feverish excitement among primary school children that wer in the main running for fun and the thrill of taking part.
The Cumman na mBunscoil GAA programme is sponsored by Allianz who put great store by the investment in an important and emotionally engaging level of sport, often witnessed only by those taking part but never forgotten.
There was no commercial involvement at yesterday’s event and one teacher formerly involved at committee level told Sport for Business that it was an area which had never really been chased after.
Yesterday’s event included wheelchair racing for the first time and to see the emotion on the faces of the kids racing, as well as the support from the stands, was something to live long in the memory.
There are of course issues with commercial involvement in school sport but nothing insurmountable.
At a time when teacher involvement at this critical stage of keeping children active and involved is under threat due to industrial unrest over Croke Park wage negotiations, it is more important than ever to explore ways in which business and sport at this level can build a mutually beneficial relationship.
