Ministers Swinging with Golf Ireland
Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly was delighted to welcome First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn to the Swingzone at The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush, on day one of the Championship. The Ministers were very well-dressed in their Open Championship jackets.
Jason Day’s Cardigan Deals the Fashion Joker
Jason Day once again stole headlines for his wardrobe choices, arriving at Royal Portrush in a black $435 cardigan covered in a playing card motif featuring the King of Spades.
Designed by the trend-forward Malbon Golf brand, the sweater had fans either admiring his bold fashion sense or questioning his eye for style.
It’s not the first time Day has tested the boundaries of traditional golf style, and while his score didn’t make waves, his outfit ensured he was still a hot topic on day one.
Portrush Pasta Uproar Forces Price Climbdown
The Ramore Wine Bar in Portrush came under fire this week after increasing its chicken pasta dish from £14.95 to £27.95 for Open visitors.
A social media backlash ensued, complete with memes and mock reviews. One AI-generated image even depicted Rory McIlroy washing dishes in the kitchen.
The public pressure was enough to force a swift u-turn, with the restaurant reinstating its original prices.
Portrush Pubs Run Dry as Guinness Floods Out
Guinness may be a national institution, but even it couldn’t withstand the Open crowds in Portrush.
By Thursday evening, several bars had completely run out of pints, prompting thirsty golf fans to document their pintless plight on social media.
Despite the rain and wind, demand surged well beyond expectations as fans from around the world embraced the spirit of the event.
Publicans are scrambling to restock ahead of the weekend, and we have absolute faith that they will.
Puppies Named After Golf Stars Rescued Near Portrush
In a heart melter of a story, six underweight puppies were found abandoned in a bag near Broughshane, not far from Portrush.
Rescued by Dogs Trust Ballymena, the puppies were each named after stars of The Open: Rory, Shane, Padraig, Tom, Justin, and Tyrell. They must not have liked Darren Clarke.
All six are now being nursed back to health and will be rehomed once ready.
R&A’s Inclusion Strategy Gets a Quiet Thumbs Up
While the eyes of the golfing world were fixed on the fairways, the R&A quietly scored a win off the course by enhancing inclusion services at Royal Portrush.
A designated multi-faith room, gender-neutral toilets, sensory-friendly quiet spaces, and improved wheelchair access were all available on-site.
Staff also distributed sunflower pins to highlight neurodiversity awareness.
Shane Lowry Mural Proves a Portrait of Pride
A mural of Shane Lowry, painted in Portrush by Derry artist Peaball, continues to delight fans and the golfer himself. The artwork has become a must-visit photo spot for visitors to the town.
Lowry’s own giddy reaction upon seeing it again this week was caught on video and shared widely. Locals in his hometown of Clara are now campaigning for a similar tribute, calling it a fitting celebration of Ireland’s major-winning hero.
