The complexities of TV contracts and scheduling are rarely considered when the public wants something to happen and other media get behind the call.
Cork hurling fans have felt hard done by over recent times with games as they shifted away from the mainstream Free to air coverage and onto GAAGo or streaming platforms.
It was forgotten in the rush to criticise that there are more games being show live now than ever before but that nobody can clear a schedule entirely for sporting matches.
Anyway all is well that ends well for the Allianz League fixture between Cork and Limerick at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday night.
RTÉ had requested to cover the game live but with TG4 having the Saturday evening slot, the game would have had to be brought forward to 6PM.
This would have put it up against the Ireland England rugby in the Guinness Six nations and Cork GAA rightly thought that would be unfair on the teams and the more than 30,000 spectators expected for the game.
Instead they had to go with the game between Armagh and Tyrone that was being played at that time and also being covered on BBC NI.
Now though TG4, already committed to showing Donegal against Dublin in the Allianz Football League on its linear channel, will show the game on the TG4 Player, streaming all around the world.
Football is dominating the coverage with the new rules providing strong interest in how they are playing out but hurling will have its day. And at least for this weekend it will have its evening as well.
SPORT FOR BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE
It will always be about choices whether for the broadcasters on which game to show or for fans on whether to attend in person. The seemingly endless rows about fans wanting everything for free all the time can be a bit tiresome but this was a common sense solution found.
WHAT’S UP NEXT?
All the games will take place this weekend as outlined above
