Reading the Irish Times this morning you could be forgiven for casting dark glances towards any hotels you pass on the way to work.

They report a survey from online travel site Trivago which shows that hotel prices in Dublin for the visit of France and England in February and march will rise by 95 per cent on what they would be for a normal weekend in those months.

Now before we rush to fetch our pitchforks it must be said that the England game is on St Patrick’s Weekend which would see soaring demand anyway and in comparison to Cardiff and Edinburgh we are model citizens.

Their prices are up 134% in Edinburgh and a staggering 257% in Cardiff.

There is of course a law of supply and demand and where supply is bigger in London, Paris and Rome the increases for a Six Nations weekend are negligible.

We would have to hope, and bank on supply picking up in the years between now and a potential hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2023.

Ticket prices for this year’s games have gone up for the adult seats by €10 but have been dropped for the schoolboy and children’s rates from €20 to €15.

Neither change makes them any easier to get your hands on them but at least you are being treated fairly if you do get them through official channels.

If that fails there are currently around 100 tickets for the France game being offered on ticket reseller viagogo , ranging in price from €576 up to €1,800 for a single seat.

There we go again with supply and demand.
