Today at Dublin City University we will be learning from and rewarding over 150 projects from inspiring schoolchildren in the world of Physical Education.

Sport for Business has been a supporter of the PEXpo since its foundation in 2015 by three PE teachers in Dublin, Paddy O’Reilly, Chris Steele and Gerry McDonnell.

It is the PE equivalent of the Young Scientist Exhibition and is also supported by Sport Ireland, Dublin City Council Sport and Wellbeing Partnership, the Physical Education Association of Ireland, and other supporters. It is a great opportunity for those involved in and around the business of sport in Ireland to get involved and be a part of an event that is growing every year and deserves as much recognition as its big relative in the science arena.

This year’s PExpo returns to DCU today and we will be there to judge the projects and highlight some of the always impressive smart thinking that the students bring to their subjects.

We will present our Annual Sport for Business Award which comes with a trophy, mentoring, a school visit and the opportunity to present the idea at our annual sponsorship showcase later in the year.

Last year’s winning project was a protein-based hazelnut spread created and marketed by students from Mount Temple School in Dublin, pictured below.

We will also be hosting a discussion on stage before the awards presentation where we will be talking to Olympians Aifric Keogh and Marcus Lawlor, the Dare to Believe team bring Olympic ideas and inspiration to schools and a number of other guests.

There are awards for the best overall projects in junior (up to 3rd year) and senior (from 4th year) categories as well as under seven main headings:

ICT and Sports Photography
The Power of Sport – Inclusion and Culture
Well-Being – Physical Mental and Social
Components of Fitness
Nutrition
Games Development
Sports Psychology
Sport for Business Award
Women in Sport Award
Project As Gaeilge Award
Best Case Study for Leaving Cert PE
Best Portfolio in Senior Cycle PE

Projects are judged not only on content but also on presentation and on the student’s ability to explain their subject and defend their conclusions on the day.

It’s a special day and we look forward to bringing you details of some of the winning projects over the coming days.
