The sporting weekend illustrated by 5 key numbers:
32 – Mayo made it through their All Ireland semi final against Tyrone but it took 32 minutes of a poor first half performance to record their first point from play. After last year’s early woes against Donegal on the biggest stage, this will cause concern among fans as they await next weekend’s other semi final between Dublin and Kerry.
1 – Cyclist Nicholas Roche secured his first Grand Tour stage victory by capturing the second stage of the Vuelta e Espana on Sunday. He lies second overall in the race.
33 – Munster kicked off their pre season Seat sponsored series of friendlies with victory over Gloucester at Thomond Park and used 33 players during the course of the game.
7 – The US Open, the last tennis Grand Slam of the year is underway at Flushing Meadow in New York with Roger Federer going into the tournament at number 7 in the world rankings, a tumble which reflects a poor season and at the age of 32, one which might not be reversed for one of the greats of the game.
9 – Lance Armstrong and the Sunday Times have had ongoing court battles for the past nine years but finally made a ‘mutually acceptable settlement’ over the weekend. The disgraced cyclist sued after an article claiming he had doped and the paper was forced to pay £300,000 in damages. After last year’s admission of the same charge the paper sued back for recovery of that money plus over £700,000 in compensation. No figure was placed on the settlement.
