Paul O'Connell lifts the RBS 6 Nations trophy 21/3/2015Every conversation at the school gates and around the office cooler this morning will be focused on one glorious weekend of sport.
It is rare that a whole nation can come together around a single shared experience but that’s what sport delivered over the past 48 hours. For those who missed the bumper afternoon of RBS 6 Nations coverage on Saturday they will feel sheepish and sorry at having missed out on entertainment and drama that went way beyond what could ever have been scripted.

For Three, in a first year of sponsorship of the Irish Rugby team this can only be seen as a magical entree to the world of engaged fans.

For other brands including Ulster Bank whose stings on the RTE coverage will have been seen more on Saturday than perhaps over the last three years this was also a triumph.

Nobody wanted to watch this time shifted. It had to be live or the screams of joy and despair from neighbours, cars, or through social media would have spoiled the impact.

Everything else we watch and share is done on our terms and in our time. Sport is different. The visceral impact of watching events unfold is unmatched.

This weekend will live long in the memory of the sporting nation and whets the appetite for more of the same if that’s possible in October at the World Cup.
