The Barilla Youth Triathlon National Championships took place in Galway recently and attracted more than 260 seven to fifteen-year-olds to take part.

Participants from all four provinces raced over distances ranging from a 100m swim, 2km bike ride and 800m run for those in the 7-9 years age group up to a 400m swim, 9km bike and 3km run for the 14-15 years age group.

Organisers, Predator Triathlon Club have hosted the Youth Triathlon National Championships for the past 6 years and the event, on the picturesque shores of Loughrea, is now the biggest junior triathlon in Ireland.

Barilla, a family owned Italian food company and advocate for a balanced lifestyle, was supporting the event for the first time.“Barilla

“Barilla have always advocated a message of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through sport and healthy eating,” said Business Account Manager Paula Butterly.

“Triathlon Ireland’s commitment to educating children on the benefits of enjoying sport and keeping fit matched our own beliefs and therefore we were delighted to support them with the TriHero Programme and the Youth Triathlon Festival.”

The TriHeroes Programme, delivered by Triathlon Ireland, is designed to help schools and teachers introduce triathlon activities to pupils whilst supporting the needs of the schools to deliver Physical Education progression for all pupils.

The programme teaches the basic lifelong skills of swimming, cycling and running and each student will get the chance to take part in a mini-triathlon at the end of the 4 week coached programme.
