The 13th annual Trinity Sport Awards brought the college sporting year to a celebratory close last night, with the final honours of the evening reserved for two standout achievements in Trinity sport.
It was a pleasure to host a night that captured the real sense of what it is like to be involved in sport as an important element of College life.
Basketball star Hazel Finn was named Trinity Sport Person of the Year after an exceptional season across collegiate and national competition. Finn, who has also been recognised as Women’s Super League Young Player of the Year and Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month, scored more than 300 points in Trinity Meteors’ Super League campaign and played a key role in their final win over UCC Glanmire.
The final award of the night, Trinity Sport Club of the Year, went to Dublin University Ladies Boat Club, marking a fitting end to the club’s 50th anniversary year. The club was recognised for a season of success on and off the water, including the Corcoran Cup win, strong performances at major regattas, major fundraising and outreach work, and the engagement of more than 200 novices.
Earlier in the evening, the club had also celebrated Caoimhe Dempsey’s Alumni of the Year award, while Imogen Cooney and Adelaide Telzrow were among those awarded Pinks.
The night opened with the traditional Captains’ Procession, followed by addresses from Provost Linda Doyle, Director of Sport and Physical Activity Michelle Tanner, and Trinity Sport Union Chair Jane Prendergast.
Among the other major winners were Dublin University Gaelic Football’s Trench Cup side, named Team of the Year after securing promotion back to the Sigerson Cup, and Colm Nouvian Flynn of Dublin University Fencing, who was named Coach of the Year after another outstanding season for the club.
Katie Lynch of Dublin University Fencing received the Women in Sport Champion award for her leadership in widening participation, her work with the Lead-Her Women in Sport initiative, and her involvement in the Erasmus-funded Fencing after Breast Cancer project.
Dublin University Ladies Hockey 1s were recognised with Performance of the Year for their EY2 playoff victory, while Liam Cribbin of Men’s Gaelic Football was named Volunteer of the Year.
The full list of winners included Kayak and Canoe InterVarsity for Event of the Year, Maureen Bartsch as Trinity Sport Centre Member of the Year, Harry Twomey of Dublin University Sailing Club as Club Officer of the Year, Dublin University Archery Club as Inclusive Club of the Year, and Trinity Women’s Rugby for the Communications and Impact Award.
