Sport for Business wrote last week after the IRUPA Awards night that one small improvement in the format there may be to give some small degree of recognition to the clubs from which many of the players originally came.
This new awards from sponsors of club rugby and the community rugby partner of the IRFU is a step in the right direction, though will take time to build to the same level of reach achieved by IRUPA.
Reggie Corrigan will be the main presenter of the awards on the night. He will also be one of the panellists at ‘Utilising Sport to benefit your Business’ a business breakfast briefing on Thursday morning, 16th May which is now sold out.
There wil be seven awards for Player of the Year in each of Divisions 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B as well as top points scorer, try of the year and young player of the year.
“Every weekend, club rugby players across the country line out to represent their club and their community,” said Carol McMahon, Head of Sponsorship at Ulster Bank.
“We saw this year, with the scouting of Craig Ronaldson (pictured above) from Lansdowne to Connacht, that our club sides are brimming with talent. Recognising player commitments and achievements is important, as these are the players who help to build community pride and passion.”
“Ulster Bank is a proud supporter of club and grassroots rugby throughout Ireland. This is our third year as Official Community Partner to the IRFU and we are delighted to be introducing the first ever Ulster Bank League Awards.”
