Volleyball Ireland has named Jonathan Barker as its new Chief Executive Officer, following what it described as a highly competitive recruitment process.

Barker steps into the role with a strong background in commercial growth and leadership. He most recently served as Deputy CEO and Commercial Director at radio station Sunshine 106.8, where he played a central role in boosting revenues, building long-term partnerships, and reshaping the organisation’s commercial strategy.

With a career spanning multiple media outlets, Barker brings a focus on developing sustainable relationships and strategic growth, qualities that closely align with Volleyball Ireland’s current ambitions.

His arrival comes at a time of momentum for the organisation, as it continues to deliver on its Feel The Buzz strategic plan.

He will replace Gary Stewart, who led the organisation to its current position and stepped down last month to take up the role as CEO of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association.

Clodagh Nic Canna, President of Volleyball Ireland, welcomed the appointment, saying:

“Jonathan’s energy, vision, and proven ability to develop commercial opportunities make him the ideal person to lead Volleyball Ireland into its next phase of growth.”

“His passion to move into the sporting sector is refreshing and exciting.”

“This, combined with his partnership-building expertise, will be instrumental as we aim to expand our reach, build our performance programmes and evolve our organisation to have more organic, sustainable revenues to achieve our ambitious objectives.”

“I’m honoured and excited to be joining Volleyball Ireland at such a pivotal time for the sport,” added Barker.

“With a strong foundation in place and a passionate community driving its growth, there is huge potential to elevate volleyball’s profile across the country.”

“I look forward to working with the board, staff, volunteers, and wider sporting community to grow participation, strengthen performance pathways, and build the visibility the sport truly deserves.”

Barker will officially take up the position in early November. His arrival coincides with Volleyball Ireland’s biggest-ever indoor league season, which has seen a 20% increase in the number of teams competing nationwide.
