Irish number one and reigning Senior National champion Hannah Craig has beaten 7th seed Yasshmita Jadish Kumar of Malaysia in straight games to reach the quarter-final of the Cannon Kirk GillenMarkets Irish Squash Open 2024.

Craig is ranked #89 in the world 17 places below her opponent at the Fitzwilliam Club in Dublin last night.

The Ulster native took a thrilling opening game 15-13 before doubling her lead with a quickfire 11-6 second game. She then closed out the match in style in the final game.

She is now in uncharted territory in the quarter finals where she’ll face Egyptian no.1 seed and World #18 Nada Abbas at 2pm today. The match will be shown live on the Irish Squash YouTube channel.

“She will be the highest ranked opponent I have ever faces and to do so in Ireland is fantastic,” she said.

With Squash on the Olympic programme for LA28 and with the Irish team winning gold in Division 3 at the European Team Championships last weekend, with Hannah Craig one of the stars of the team, these are special days for the sport.
