The IRFU has issued an open invitation to all male athletes, from all sports, to consider if they have what it takes to be part of the new Irish Rugby Men’s Sevens Programme.
The Union will hold four talent identification days during January after an initial registration process that is open until December 19th. The locations have yet to be named but we understand there will be one in each province.
They will test the speed, power and endurance of players, to see whether they have the physical characteristics to become an elite level Sevens player. Technique and tactics will only come to the fore later as the group selected begin to prepare for entry in the Men’s Rugby European 7’s Championship which takes place in Montenegro in June.
Success could yet lead to Ireland having a Men’s team to compete alongside the Women’s team likely to qualify to take part in the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The IRFU has invested heavily in the Women’s game but has not previously shown great enthusiasm for 7’s with the feeling being that it might dilute the playing pool available for provincial and national teams in the 15-a-side sport.
The popularity of 7’s among players and spectators though, and it’s inclusion on the Olympic programme for 2016, made it inevitable that a change of heart would apply.
“We are looking for sporting X-factor and to ensure we leave no stone unturned we are not limiting our search to those already playing club rugby,” said IRFU Performance Director David Nucifora.
“Rugby Sevens is a game that rewards explosive and agile athletes with good handling skills from any sporting background.
The initial questionnaire which needs to be filled out as part of the registration process looks for any previous exposure to strength and conditioning training as well as details of any current or past injury problems. Players can sign up here.
