Patrick O’Brien has resigned as CEO of Liberty Insurance in a move that was signalled to employees yesterday.
His successor has been named as Tom McIlduff who has previously held senior roles with Europa General Underwriters in Northern Ireland and Bank of Ireland in the UK.
He was Chief Operating Officer at the latter after heading up the Banks Strategic Marketing Division in Northern Ireland. He joins Liberty in January having most recently been a Principal at the Boston Consulting Group
A native of County Down, McIlduff is an engineering graduate from Queens University Belfast.
Liberty Insurance has completed two seasons of an initial five year deal as the first ever combined title sponsor of the All Ireland Hurling and Camogie Championships. It has also been a passionate supporter of Women’s sport and hosted a highly regarded Business Breakfast on that subject at Croke Park in September, and event in which Sport for Business was honoured to be involved.

At the time of the initial announcement of the Liberty / GAA partnership Patrick O’Brien spoke of how “the GAA embodies values our company holds true: the powers of dedication, determination, and the understanding that real teamwork can lead to great accomplishments.”
“We are very proud to now be part of the GAA team. Not only as a partner to our oldest games, Hurling and Camogie, but as a partner on coaching and responsible driving initiatives, and also the roll out of Camogie development programmes.”
Liberty has a long and deep involvement with sport and sportsmanship in other markets, most notably in its home base of the USA and it is hoped that the change in senior management will maintain that strand of marketing and social responsibility building here as well.
On a personal note we would like to wish O’Brien well. He has always been an open and engaging CEO, building the brand with vigour and not afraid to test himself with hurl and sliothar, as befits a club member at St Vincents GAA club in Dublin.
