Tom Brady led the New England Patriots into history this morning winning a sixth superbowl for himself and the team. That ties the Pittsburgh Steelers who won their sixth title in 2009, the last year that the average number of viewers of the spectacular was below 100 million.
We do not know TV viewing figures yet for last night’s broadcast on CBS but it was a dour if close game, the lowest scoring in Super Bowl history and the half time show was not one that grabbed the imagination.
The number of viewers has dropped slightly in each of the last three years, while the value of a 30 second advert has risen to this year’s high of $5.25 million.
That number was only €3 million back in 2009 showing the value of ‘appointment to view’television in an age of streaming and time shifting.
Last night was also a strike for the old guard with Head Coach Bill Bellichik the oldest ever at 66 and Tom Brady the oldest Quarterback at age 41, though claiming afterwards that he was ready to play on to the age of 45.
