Insurance giant Allianz formally launched its continued sponsorship of the Allianz National Hurling League at Croke Park yesterday. The first games get underway this weekend when Cork face Tipperary on Saturday night and Galway host Kilkenny in a repeat of last year’s signature showdown. The two games will be televised live on Setanta Sport and TG4 respectively.
“The return of top level inter-county hurling is very welcome after the long break,” said GAA President Liam O’Neill, “and much of the expectations that will garner around teams this season will be generated on the back of their performances in this competition as the best hurling teams in the country clash on a regular basis.”
“We’re delighted and privileged to continue to be part of the action through our support for the Allianz Leagues and Cumann na mBunscol,” added Brendan Murphy, CEO of Allianz. “GAA resonates in our communities more than any other sport and we hope that our support is going some way to making sure that Gaelic Games continues to thrive right across the island.”
Allianz also sponsor the National Football League which drew a crowd of 25,000 to Croke Park for the opening fixture between Dublin and Cork at the beginning of the month. Dublin’s hurlers will also play at the stadium on St Patrick’s weekend in a double header with the footballers.
In January 2012 Allianz announced a three year extension of it’s support for the GAA National Football and Hurling Leagues. Upon completion of that extension in 2015, the relationship will have been in place for 22 years, making it one of the longest running sponsorships in Irish sport.
Allianz is also a supporter of the Irish Paralympics team and used wheelchair athlete Mark Rohan in a series of effective marketing campaigns in 2012, and is a long time partner of Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley as well as the Business to Arts Sponsorship Awards.
