Boxing has yet to be confirmed for the LA Olympics in 2028 but if the governance issues that have plagued it in recent years are resolved Ireland will have what looks to be a strong next generation of fighters to fly the flag.

It is Ireland’s most successful sport at the games with Kellie Harrington, Katie Talyor and Michael Carruth all winning Gold in the last 30 years.

The European U22 Championships in Croatia this week have highlighted the talent that is coming in their wake.

No fewer than seven medallists will be returning to Dublin Airport this evening.

Heavyweight Jack Marley became the third fighter to win Gold at the Championships yesterday following on from Light Middleweight Lisa O’Rourke and Featherweight Niamh Fay who both became European Champions themselves earlier in the week.

Ireland finished second in the overall Women’s Medal Table with Aoibhe Carabine winning silver at Light Heavyweight and Kaci Rock taking Bronze at Welterweight.

Dylan Eagleson fighting at 54 KG and Paul Loonam at 60 KG both won bronze to complete an impressive medal haul for Team Ireland.

The sport remains difficult to attract commercial sponsors towards but every additional Irish success story makes it more attractive and we hope to be able to do something in this area during 2022.
