Irish athletes had a day to remember on the world stage yesterday in boxing, athletics and sailing.
Gabriel Dossan from Galway defeated the number four seed at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Armenia and will now fight for a guaranteed bronze medal in the middleweight category.
He was joined by Sean Mari from the Monkstown Boxing Club in Dublin who is at the same stage in the flyweight division. Both boxers return to the ring on Friday alongside Lightweight JP Hale from Belfast.
Irish boxers trebled the number of Gold medals they had won in Men’s or Women’s World Championships only last week when Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke struck gold.
On the water off the coast of Mexico there was more Irish celebration as Ireland’s Finn Lynch made it comfortably into the Gold fleet series after three days of qualification round racing at the ILCA7 World Championships.
He lies in eleventh place overall with racing set to continue today.
On the track last night there was yet more to celebrate with Sarah Lavin winning gold in the 100 metre hurdle event at the international Anhalt meeting in Germany and Andrew Coscoran taking bronze in the Meeting IberoAmericano in Spain recording a seasons best time of 3:36.84.
In a week where the sports pages are dominated by events in the big three sports of Gaelic Games, Rugby and Football, it is worth taking time to celebrate the fact that Irish athletes are competing at the highest level in a wider variety of sporting pursuits than has perhaps ever been the case.
