Katie McCabe was back in action for Arsenal in the English Women’s Super League last night and she was also the subject of an interesting piece of data that WHOOP released after her part in Tuesday’s epic World Cup qualification.

McCabe is a WHOOP athlete and has worn WHOOP for more than a year now, including on Tuesday night during the match.

The wearable takes multiple readings from your body and calculates when you are likely to be at the best time for peak performance and for recovery.

Going into the game in Glasgow McCabe had an 81 per cent Recovery Score and had achieved a 99 per cent Sleep Performance the night before.

This set her up well for the game and allowed her to give everything out on the pitch, racking up a 20.4 Strain Score, including what she did during the warm-up.

The Strain measurement is the cumulative cardiovascular load that your body takes on. It is based on the Borg Scale and is ranked from 0-21 meaning that McCabe’s contribution was almost at the maximum it could have been.

Preparation though is never in the hours immediately before a game. During the 7 days beforehand, including in camp with Vera Pauw’s squad, she had an average of 76 per cent Recovery, and a Sleep Performance of 93 per cent equating for her to an average nightly rest of seven hours and 55 minutes.

“I understand my body a lot better now,” she said. “It has opened my eyes up to those small details throughout the day that can impact a good recovery or a good sleep.”

WHOOP operates with individuals rather than the whole team but it has also signed strategic partnerships with Rowing Ireland and Rugby Players Ireland.

The company is based in the US and has been adopted and promoted by athletes including Rory McIlroy, Patrick Mahomes and Kevin Durant.

It established its European base in Dublin in 2021 and recently became a member of the Sport for Business community. Watch out for some collaborations which we feel will be of interest in the coming months.
