Vision Sports Ireland has launched Beyond Vision 2025 – 2028, an ambitious new national strategy designed to ensure that every person who is blind or vision impaired can access sport and physical activity wherever and whenever they choose.

The strategy signals a major cultural shift, moving beyond participation numbers to a nationwide commitment to inclusion, accessibility, and lifelong wellbeing.

Despite progress in recent years, participation remains critically low.

Just 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 10 children who are blind or vision impaired meet World Health Organisation physical activity guidelines – leaving many at greater risk of isolation, poorer health outcomes, and lost confidence.

Beyond Vision aims to change that story. At the core of the new strategy is the voice and lived experience of members; people whose lives are changed through access to physical activity.

As Vision Sports Ireland member Susan, who takes part in the “I Can” programme, explained: “I have come on leaps and bounds. The online engagement programme gave me so much more than exercise. I feel better mentally, I’m more confident, and I’m more willing to give new things a go now.”

Her story is one of many that shaped the design of the new strategy and reflects the organisation’s belief that everyone deserves the chance to Start Well. Live Well. Age Well.

Through Beyond Vision 2025 – 2028, Vision Sports Ireland will:

  • Champion national leadership in accessibility and inclusion – setting standards, convening partners, and embedding inclusive practice across sport
  • Strengthen pathways across every life stage – ensuring children, adults, and older people can access meaningful participation and progression
  • Promote cultural change in sport and society – increasing awareness, confidence, and education across schools, clubs, and communities
  • Amplify member voices – embedding lived experience in programmes, campaigns, and advocacy
