The 123.ie National Indoor Athletics Championships will take centre stage this weekend, with the stars of Irish athletics returning to national competition at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena across February 28th and March 1st.
Sunday’s action will be broadcast live on free to air television, with a two-hour programme airing on Virgin Media 2 from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. The live coverage reflects growing national interest and provides a broader platform for the country’s leading performers.
Demand for the championships has been strong, with tickets for Sunday already sold out. Organisers have advised that spectators should not travel to the venue without a ticket. A limited number of tickets remain available for Saturday’s programme, while both days of competition will be streamed in full via the Athletics Ireland YouTube channel.
Competition begins at 12pm on Saturday, with Sunday’s schedule getting underway from 11.30am.
A host of established names and emerging talents are set to compete across the two days. Among those entered are Kate O’Connor (long jump and 60m hurdles), Mark English (800m), Sarah Lavin (60m hurdles), Sharlene Mawdsley (400m), Andrew Coscoran (3000m and 1500m), and recently crowned 60m national record holder Bori Akinola (60m).
Saturday’s track programme will be highlighted by finals in the 200m and 60m hurdles, while the field events are expected to deliver strong competition in both the high jump and triple jump. The women’s 60m hurdles in particular has the look of one of the races of the weekend, with both Lavin and O’Connor among the headline entries.
Sunday promises a packed schedule of finals, with Akinola bidding to secure back-to-back senior indoor titles in the 60m following his recent record-breaking performance. The men’s and women’s 400m events also feature deep fields, while O’Connor’s potential appearance in the women’s long jump could add further intrigue to the programme.
The combination of elite domestic competition, a sold-out crowd, and national television coverage signals a strong start to the championship season and offers a prominent stage for Ireland’s athletes ahead of upcoming international assignments.
