Cork City Council has opened a competitive procurement process to appoint an Official Sports Brand Partner for the Cork City Marathon, creating a significant new commercial opportunity around one of Ireland’s fastest-growing participation events.
The proposed agreement has an estimated value of €216,000 excluding VAT and will run for 36 months. It covers sportswear, race shirts and associated clothing and accessories, but the scale and structure of the process suggest Cork is seeking considerably more than a straightforward apparel supplier.
Interested companies must first complete a selection questionnaire, after which the three highest-ranked valid applicants will be invited into a competitive dialogue with the Council.
That approach gives Cork City Council and the shortlisted brands an opportunity to shape the final partnership together, rather than limiting the tender to a tightly prescribed supply contract.
The successful company could become involved in participant apparel, official merchandise, volunteer and staff clothing, retail activation, training initiatives and year-round engagement with Cork’s running community.
The procurement also identifies reducing environmental impact as a strategic objective, with green initiatives to form part of the dialogue process.
That could include the materials used in race shirts, sustainable sourcing, packaging, transport and delivery, and the management of surplus apparel after the event.
It gives sustainability a meaningful place within the commercial conversation rather than treating it as a supplementary element.
The opportunity comes at an important stage in the Cork City Marathon’s development.
More than 12,300 people took part across the marathon, half marathon and 10K in 2026, with new start and finish arrangements centred on Grand Parade and South Mall.
Demand for the 2027 event has grown to the point that entries for all three distances are being allocated by ballot.
That level of demand makes the marathon an increasingly attractive platform for sportswear companies seeking direct access to active consumers.
Sports Direct earlier this summer signed up as a partner of the Dublin Marathon Group, covering both the Irish Life Dublin Marathon and the Dublin City Council Half Marathon.
Unlike many traditional sponsorship properties, a running event gives a sports brand the opportunity to place its products directly on the people participating.
The relationship can also begin months before race day.
Marathon and half-marathon runners typically follow extended training plans, creating opportunities for footwear trials, technical apparel, retail events, club partnerships, digital coaching and content focused on the participant journey.
An official sports brand could also develop Cork-specific merchandise, giving runners a lasting connection to both the event and the city.
The marathon is already supported by Analog Devices, which began a three-year title partnership in 2026.
That agreement was designed to increase capacity, support community programmes, and develop initiatives to reduce barriers to participation.
Those programmes include work with Sanctuary Runners, Back 2 Boston, United by Miles, the Youth Challenge and the Run for All initiative for participants with additional needs.
The appointment of an official sports brand would add another substantial tier to the commercial structure.
Sport for Business Perspective
The €216,000 estimated value and three-year term demonstrate increasing commercial ambition around the Cork City Marathon.
The winning brand will not be judged solely by the race shirts supplied on the weekend.
The greater opportunity lies in becoming part of the runner’s journey before, during and after the event, while supporting sustainability, participation growth and the wider profile of Cork as a major sporting city.
