Karen Coventry has brought more than two decades of commitment to Special Olympics Ireland to her role as Chief Executive Officer, combining deep organisational knowledge with a determination to broaden opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

She joined in 2003 and progressed through senior leadership roles before becoming CEO in August 2025.

Her leadership was particularly evident in June 2026, when Dublin hosted the Special Olympics Ireland National Summer Games, bringing together 1,277 athletes, approximately 3,000 volunteers and competition across 15 venues.

The Games celebrated sporting achievement while demonstrating the extraordinary community of families, coaches, volunteers and commercial partners supporting the Special Olympics movement.

Coventry’s influence extends beyond major events to strengthening participation, athlete leadership, inclusion and long-term organisational sustainability.

Her contribution reflects a belief in sport’s power to transform lives, creating opportunities for athletes to develop confidence, friendships and independence while challenging wider perceptions of disability.

This is the 14th year we have listed 50 Women of Influence in Irish Sport. We will add new names daily through early December.

We have an open nomination process, and you can nominate potential additions until our closing date of November 10th, 2026.

Nominations are open here.

Our definition of influence is broad and includes those making a difference in how sport is governed, managed, and brought to life. This year’s list will include CEO’s, leaders, founders, coaches, storytellers and more. To highlight those who may be less familiar, we deliberately exclude those who are still active players in their sport.

We’ll host our Annual Women in Sport Conference at Lidl HQ on Tuesday, December 1st, featuring a range of national and international speakers and a room full of inspiring guests.

To reserve your place, you can book a ticket below.
