Bord Bia has partnered with Irish Olympians Rob and Marian Heffernan, and their sports star family members Cathal and Meghan, to encourage the public to ‘Crack On’ and take advantage of eggs as fuel for a busy lifestyle.

New figures show that 705.6 million eggs were purchased in Ireland last year. That’s 14 eggs for every adult and child on the island.

The Heffernan family called on their fellow Irish Olympian Derval O’Rourke to judge a head-to-head skills challenge on which team could whip up a nutritious eggs recipe the fastest.

International Irish athlete Marian Heffernan teamed up with Meghan, who plays for Cork City WFC, to make mini frittatas and spicy salsa in less than 20 minutes.

The boy’s team, Olympic medallist Rob Heffernan and Ireland U17 international defender Cathal, were put to the test making poached eggs and home fries. But the call went the way of the girls.

“As a busy family of athletes, we’re always looking for quick and easy ways to incorporate good sources of protein into our diets and eggs are a family favourite for fuelling some of our exercise sessions,” said Rob Heffernan.

“For sportspeople, and anyone with a busy lifestyle, having enough high-quality protein in your diet is essential and it’s something we’re always conscious of. It was great fun challenging ourselves to whip up nutritious and quick meals, and it was clear from the results that Quality Mark eggs are hard to beat as fuel for a busy life.”

“We’re delighted to partner with the Heffernan family for this year’s Crack On campaign,” said Bord Bia Brand Manager, Hylda Adams.

“They are excellent ambassadors for the nutritional benefits and versatility of eggs for meals like lunch and dinner, as they appreciate the role eggs can play as fuel for a busy lifestyle.”

“With 91% of Irish people eating eggs weekly, this World Egg Day we’re encouraging consumers to continue looking for Bord Bia Quality Mark when buying eggs.”
