Each weekend we select performances from Irish sport that are worthy of highlighting. This weekend we are looking at history and hard work in the League of Ireland, a third weekend of record setting on the track and another win for UL in the Fitzgibbon Cup.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Sky Ireland, one of Sport for Business’ partners and backers of our coverage of football.

Bohemian FC

Not only was victory secured on the pitch with a 1-0 win over Shamrock Rovers but an even greater one was secured in the stands with a record 33,208 fans packing the Aviva for a League of Ireland match.

It had the spirit of an FAI Cup Final but this was the League, on its opening weekend and it was brilliant.

Inter generational fans wearing red and black, green and white mingled in the streets around the ground and this was a perfect way to persuade the many young kids, and their Mums and Dads that a live football occasion is something really special.

The Shelbourne FC Electrician

Three goals in 15 minutes between Shelbourne and Derry on the opening night of the League was exciting enough and when the Champions added a third it looked like the perfect night.

Then the lights went out, literally and it took the Shelbourne FC electrician and an emergency team from the ESB 45 minutes to get the back again.

The game finished at almost 1030 pm, Virgin media stuck with it throughout having subbed in St Pats and Drogheda for the darkness and everyone went home happy.

Sarah Healy

For the third weekend in a row Sarah Healy has lowered a national record on the indoor athletics circuit.

This time is was her own 1,500 metres, taking almost two seconds off.

Next weekend she is in the lineup for the National Indoor Championships at the Sport Ireland Campus.  Could she make it four in a row?

And apropos of nothing really, I used to coach her playing Ladies Gaelic Football.

University of Limerick Hurling

UL won their third Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup in the past four seasons, following up on their Camogie sisters in the Ashbourne Cup last weekend.
