Each weekend, we highlight some of the performances that light up the Irish sporting landscape.
This weekend, we highlight action in Rugby, in Gymnastics, in Athletics, in Show Jumping and Horse Racing.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by Sky, one of Sport for Business’s key partners, and supporters of our coverage of all things Football.
Irish Rugby Men’s Senior Team
Winning the Championship would have been the cherry on top but maybe France deserved it just that little bit more and the presentation in an empty Aviva Stadium on Saturday night, maybe not reflective of what a wonderful Championship this was. A triple Crown is a good return, especially after the initial performance against France, and the enthusiasm has been rekindled ahead of a big year with the Nations Championship this summer and autumn, and the Rugby World Cup in Australia next year.
Irish Rugby Men’s U20
Almost an echo of the senior team was achieved by the U20’s who landed their own Triple Crown with victory over Scotland in Cork on Sunday afternoon.
Irish Gymnastics
Rhys McClenaghan’s return to the podium on Friday may not have been a surprise to some outside the sport, despite his absence through injury since the Olympic Gold, but the fact that he was joined by Eamon Montgomery and James Hickey in winning medals at the Antalya World Cup event, the first ranking tournament for LA2028 qualification is even more impressive.
Irish Throwers
We have witnessed increasing confidence and success in Athletics over the past few years and now that feel good factor is extending to the Field events with Nicola Tuthill landing Silver in the Hammer and Eric Favors Bronze in the Discus at the European Throwing Championships in Nicosia.
Gaelic Warrior
The performance of Gaelic Warrior in winning the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup for Willie Mullins, Paul Townend and Rich Ricci on Friday was done in as impressive fashion as many could remember for many a year. Matching ther plaudits for Galopin Des Champs and setting up a sense of excitement for his coming back again in 2027.
