Rio Olympics 2016The International Olympic Committee has released some staggering data about the media and digital reach of the Rio 2016 games.

They show the rapid growth of digital media as well as the enduring popular appeal of the games despite the concerns expressed over doping corruption and excess.

One small caveat on the following top 10 digital facts from the games is that they were prefaced in the statistics pack by the repeated claim that over 6 million tickets were sold for attendance at the games, representing 92 per cent of the capacity…

  • 350,000 total hours of broadcast coverage from around the world, an increase from less than 200,000 in London 2012.
  • 500 TV channels and more than 250 digital platforms carried live coverage.
  • There was 218,000 hours of digital coverage versus 81,500 from London 2012.
  • US Host broadcaster NBC exceeded 2.5 billion live streaming minutes, over 1 billion more than all previous Olympic Games combined.
  • More than 9 million hours of content was streamed on the Olympic Video Player, with as many as 1 million daily unique viewers for live streaming and on-demand video.
  • Over 26 million visits to the site, more than double compared to London 2012.
  • 70 per cent of website visits on mobile phones or tablets.
  • The IOC maintained social media streams in nine languages on seven different platforms.
  • It claims more than 4 billion social media impressions, a metric for the number of times IOC posts have been viewed.
  • The Olympics Facebook page attracted 14.6 million fans, almost double the number since London.
