The Curragh Racecourse has received a major double boost as it sets off towards completion of the major redevelopment which will see it unveiled in 2019 as one of the most modern sporting facilities in Europe.

Tattersalls has agreed to extend its support as title sponsor of the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival in 2018. This will include sponsorship of the Group 1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas, Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas and Tattersalls Gold Cup.

All three races take place on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th May, with the weekend continuing to be branded as the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival.

Total prize money for the Tattersalls Irish 1000 and 2000 Guineas has received a major boost with the support of Horse Racing Ireland and Tattersalls with both races increasing from 300,000 euro to 350,000 euro.

Last year Churchill become the 9th horse to win both the Irish and English Guineas, while Winter was only the third filly to win both Classics.

“The Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival is one of the highlights of the European racing calendar and the flagship of the Tattersalls global sponsorship portfolio,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony.

“Our renewed sponsorship at The Curragh demonstrates the Tattersalls commitment to Irish racing and reflects the consistent support we receive at our sales from all sectors of the Irish racing and breeding industry.”

“Tattersalls are very valued partners of the Curragh and we are extremely grateful to Edmond Mahony and his team for agreeing again to support three of our premier races in 2018,” added Derek McGrath, Curragh Racecourse CEO.

“We look forward to continuing to enhance our partnership to include many new opportunities that the redevelopment project will bring when completed in 2019.”

The Tattersalls announcement was quickly followed by news from Horse Racing Ireland that the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby has been ranked as the leading three-year-old race in the world.

“It is very pleasing that last year the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby was the highest rating race restricted to three-year-olds run anywhere in the world and that the Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Longines Irish Champions Weekend rated the highest of all the fillies and mares’ races,” said Horse Racing Ireland Director of Racing Jason Morris.

“To have two Irish races as the global leaders in their respective categories in 2017 underlines the incredible quality of the Irish Flat racing programme and the calibre of horses that racegoers can expect to see on our premier Flat racing days.”
