Irish sport is mourning the passing this morning of Eddie Jordan, who died surrounded by his family in Cape Town after a year-long battle with Cancer. He was 76 years old.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE, the ex-Formula 1 team owner, TV pundit and entrepreneur,” said a family statement.

“He passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town in the early hours of 20 March 2025.”

After a successful Karting career and a spell working with the Bank of Ireland,  his personality allowed him to progress through Motor Sport at a time when such a thing was still possible.

In 1991, he founded the Jordan Racing Team, which competed in F1 until 2005 and gave Michael Schumacher his first contract.

Jordan GP finished 1-2 at the Belgian Grand Prix in 10998 with Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher, one of four wins for the team.

He remained an active figure around the pit lanes, and it can only be imagined how bright his start would have shone if Drive to Survive had been around during his time as a principal.

Earlier this year, despite his treatment, he was part of a consortium that bought London Irish Rugby Club out of administration.

He was a larger than life character, always very engaging on the number of occasions I had the pleasure to share a table with him at events.

He will be sorely missed.

Ar dheis Dé go Raibh a Anam.
