In the week where the Ireland Women’s squad has been named for its Guinness Six Nations Campaign and the Men’s team take on Wales at the Aviva Stadium, it is appropriate that Energia has given a fresh twist to last year’s Rugby campaign, pushing weight and energy behind the Women where it is most needed.

The video below is a smart reworking of the light-hearted potential impact of a team that rises to the top of the national consciousness and while there is some way to go before that could be said to be real for the Women’s team, every step forward is one to be applauded.

This is a team that has won one of Ireland’s four Grand Slams in the Six Nations, a team that made it to the Semi-Finals of a Rugby World Cup, a team that hosted the Rugby World Cup, and a team that was the first one from Ireland at senior level to beat New Zealand.

That history gives credibility to their claims on Irish rugby fans’ affection but it has yet to materialise to anything like the same extent as for the men’s.

Fiona Coghlan was the transformational Captain that led Ireland to each of those landmarks and she is on board now as an ambassador for Energia and its new campaign.

“I know there’s always a scramble for tickets for the men’s games but if we can get a fan base behind the women’s game, and I know with Energia we’re hoping to get the support behind that as well, I think it’s a great opportunity for families to go to international rugby,” she said.

“Getting behind the team and being part of the journey and not just when they’re winning like the men’s team, but from where we are now can really be a great way to get involved for new fans and children.”

“It’s a young squad, and we have the chance to get to know them and the people behind them in Dublin, Cork and Belfast during this Guinness Six Nations.

“France and England are a bit ahead of the rest still but each of the games against Wales, Scotland and Italy can be competitive.”

The call then is for those who revel in the excitement of a Men’s Six Nations to do likewise for the Women’s game and prove that they are a full rather than just a half a fan.
