Ruth Fahy is to take up the reains as the new CEO of Galway WFC on September 1st.
She is the latest in a line of women CEO’s in Irish sport and the first of a domestic Irish football club.
Fahy is a qualified solicitor and had been working in Dublin with William Fry before returning to play for Galway WFC at the start of this season.
She has always been a strong advocate for Women in Sport and was one of our Sport for Business PwC 30 Under 30 back in 2017. She has also been co-commentator on Irish Internationals and at the 2019 FIFA omen’s World Cup with RTÉ.
Galway currently sit 5th in the Women’s National League and are in good form having recorded a 6-1 win over Cork City on Saturday.
Fahy’s first item on her desk will be the design and implementation of a new strategic vision for the club.
“Galway WFC has always been a side that has had enormous potential and now the time is right to capitalise on that,” she said.
“This appointment is a hugely progressive step and an indication of the club’s ambitions both and off the pitch.”
“Women’s football continues to evolve at a rapid rate. As standards rise on the pitch, so too do the demands off it. In order for our players and coaching staff to compete at the top level, they need the right support structures in place.”
“Massive efforts have been put in by club personnel over the past decade and we now need to elevate our club structures to the next level to truly reap the benefits of this work.”
“I have no qualms about the challenges that we will face as we work towards a new club vision. But I’m not afraid to do things differently where needs be. I believe in the talent we have in Galway and know that, with the right systems and strategic plan in place, we can achieve something special with this club. I’m incredibly grateful to the board for this opportunity and excited to get started.”
“This is a very exciting development for Galway Women’s FC,” added Chair Stephen Moran.
“We want to get to the next level, and we believe that Ruth can make a massive contribution. We will be the first WNL Club to appoint a full time CEO.”
“We currently have teams in national competition at U17, U19 and senior level so this is a really interesting time. It is important that we continue to bring through players to a senior side that can compete seriously at national level.”
We can only wish Ruth the very best of luck in this latest stage of her career.
Here is an interview we did with her in advance of the 2019 Women’s World Cup…
