It would take a lot more than a drop of rain to dampen the spirits of the nearly 3,000 Mothers and Others who descended on Portmarnock and Malahid on Saturday for the Sports Direct LGFA Annual Blitz.

The phones were on record and the mass warm up had everybody buzzing, though the multiple bus journeys from every corner of the country had them pretty much flying by the time they had arrived anyway.

This initiative has been brought to life in clubs across the country, bringing some back to the sport after a break and others to it for the very first time.

Some have been drawn in from watching daughters and sons from the sideline as spectators, mentors and coaches but there are as many reasons for involvement as their are players.

The focus of the games is on fun with a dose of physical activity that leaves the players buzzing. As can be seen from Piaras O Midheach’s great photographs above and below there is no restriction on dress code.

Some clubs come together primarily for this blitz but an ever growing number are doing training on a weekly basis and organising matches locally against local clubs.

Sports Direct got involved as Title Sponsors of the programme after an LGFA presentation at the Sport for Business Sponsorship Showcase in 2019 and were very much a part of the fun and games on Saturday with beach balls, a giant deckchair and multiple other activations.

This is sport at its most welcoming and its most fun, a brilliant day out regardless of the weather.
