It was a result determined as much by mathematics as balls bowled but the Irish Women’s U19 team have qualified for the Super Six phase of the Cricket World Cup taking place in Malaysia.
Yesterday’s game against Pakistan was a must win game for both sides, each having lost one and drawn one of their first games, and needing to win to join England and the USA in going forward from the group stage.
Pakistan had a better run rate so if this game did not get played then they would have gone through by default so when the rains came in only the fourth over it seemed ominous.
A break in showers eventually brought about a reduced game of nine overs per side, with a three-over powerplay and two overs per bowler.
Ireland had gotten off to a good start and continued that scoring 69 runs off the allotted nine overs.
Cricket operates the Duckworth Lewis Stern method of calculating fair targets when rain affects play and Pakistan’s target was then set at 73 for them to win.
They were only able to get to 59 so will be on the flight home as Ireland progress.
The team will now play South Africa on Saturday 25th and then Nigeria on Wednesday 29th in the Super Six stage. The top two teams from this stage of the tournament will go on to the semi finals.
SPORT FOR BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE
This is a great achievement to qualify for the next stage at the expense of a cricket superpower like Pakistan. Laying down a very positive marker for the future of Women’s cricket.
WHAT’S UP NEXT?
Both of the Super Six Games will be televised live on Sky Sports.
